Due to religious persecution, Christopher Martin led several Billericay inhabitants on the Mayflower voyage, which is still remembered on the town sign today. The timber-framed Chantry Chapel, now St.Mary Magdalen Church on the High Street was rebuilt in brick circa 1490. Only the tower from that period remains.
