Camulodunum, Britain's oldest recorded town, still has the street layout set by the standard pattern for a Roman legionary fortress. Thereby, every soldier knew where everything was in whatever garrison fortress they may be stationed, anywhere in the Roman Empire. It remains a garrison town today and at one time had the longest railway platform in the UK, for the troop trains.
